( headcanons ) under construction
BACKGROUND
—genji and hanzo's parents (soujiro and tomoe) were in an arranged marriage and did not love each other. both had lovers and this was common knowledge and accepted. marriage was for alliances and strengthening the clan.
—their father didn't expect anything from him so he was coddled and nicknamed "suzume/sparrow" due to his flitting around the castle as a child
—eventually grew to resent not being taken seriously which is why he doubled down on his frivolous pursuits when he realized there was no point in attempting to be taken seriously by their father/clan elders
—always more naturally talented and didn't require as strenuous training as hanzo, which had a hand in his lackadaisical attitude (and was the start of hanzo's jealousy towards him)
—genji and hanzo's mother was kind to them and did not put as much pressure on them as the rest of the clan. she gave them most of their training.
—she died of cancer when genji was 15 and hanzo was 18, which was the real beginning of their schism
—in his grief, genji started to ignore his training/duties and escape the castle and start partying. hanzo was scooped up more by their father and the elders in his vulnerable state and they started to make him focus on taking over the clan
—become a well known party animal around hanamura, could always been seen in the bars or parties
—hooked up with any consenting adult for the most part. also did plenty of drinking and drugs (pot and cocaine, nothing harder than that)
—when their father died in a random raid from a rival clan, genji was hopeful that he would finally be free
—when he and hanzo fought, all of their lingering resent surfaced which is why it turned bloody
—hanzo's dragons seared his flesh and turned his bones to putty; his body was thrown off the side of one of the cliffs in the back of the castle
—overwatch had been monitoring the shimada clan for some time, and rescued him shortly after
—the dragon spirit is the only reason he survived
CYBORG BODY
—the remaining parts of his body are head (expect lower jaw/mandible), spine, and torso and most internal organs
—doesn't need food to live but can eat/drink if he wants
—doesn't really have much of a sense of taste with his synthetic tongue
—has an internal life support system in his chest/spine/brain stem
—the coverings over his ears are permanent and give him slightly enhanced hearing, ability to link with comms, and audio read outs and warnings on his internal systems
—his visor does have a HUD display if he wishes to use it, will light up with system warnings. has night and thermo vision capabilities
—was at great risk of cardiac arrest the first few years after, still will hear a danger alarm in his ears if his blood pressure gets too high
—his voice is a bit hoarse when he isn't wearing his visor and mask
—the red in his eyes were biotic lenses to heal his retina, also why his eyes seemed to change color
—mercy's biotic nanotech eventually healed most of his internal organs back to normal, is no longer under extreme risk of cardiac issues or lung collapse
—his cybernetic body in the blackwatch days was still under construction. his body eventually rejected part of his left hand (hence the tubes) and it had to be amputated
—his final update to his current look was complete about a year or two before he left overwatch
POST-OVERWATCH
— the fight with doomfist was the final straw for him and he left overwatch shortly thereafter
